How to Wash and Care for Your Hair Extensions Or Wigs | Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Detangle Your Extensions

Gently detangle your extensions before washing them. Start by applying conditioner to soften the hair and help with tangling. Use a wide-tooth comb or a detangling brush. Start from the tips and work your way up to the roots to avoid breakage.

Step 2: Prepare a Wash Basin

Fill a basin or sink with lukewarm water (not hot, as this can damage the extensions). Add a small amount of sulfate-free shampoo to the water.

Step 3: Wash the Extensions

Submerge your extensions gently into the water. Do not rub or twist the hair.
Lather the shampoo by massaging the extensions gently with your fingers from the tips to the roots, then gently detangle.

Step 4: Rinse Thoroughly

Rinse the extensions under lukewarm water until all shampoo is removed.

Step 5: Condition the Hair

Apply a generous amount of conditioner to the hair. Leave the conditioner in, then gently comb through the hair with a wide-tooth comb or detangling brush. Leave the conditioner on for about 30 minutes.

Step 6: Rinse the Conditioner

Rinse the conditioner out using cold water to seal the cuticles, leaving the extensions shiny and smooth.

Step 7: Dry the Extensions

Air dry by hanging your extensions up to dry. Avoid using a blow dryer, as excessive heat can damage the extensions.

Step 8: Style or Store Properly

Once the hair is completely dry, you can style it or store your extensions on a wig stand, mannequin head, or in a protective bag to maintain its shape and prevent tangling.
